Basically, an embassy is like an office where a foreign nation operates within another country. More technically, it’s a diplomatic mission abroad, and is typically located in a country’s capital city. They offer a full range of international services for their own citizens abroad, like passport renewal and assisting with lost or stolen passports, as well as helping with absentee voting, or even arranging evacuation in an emergency.

A consulate operates similarly to an embassy, but sometimes doesn’t offer as many services as an embassy does. It’s also typically located in a major city that isn’t the capital.

The only differences between an embassy and a consulate is location within a country, as well as which services they provide. Services provided by a consulate will depend on the consulate itself, but you can definitely expect the list to be more limited than what you’ll find at an embassy.
