Details: The Controller of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo has introduced a new series of machine readable passports with facility for the digital transfer of photographs and signature of the holder to prevent photograph substitution with effect from 02.09.96 Application on forms obtainable from the Embassy are processed and forwarded to Colombo every Monday by the Diplomatic Bag. Controller of Immigration & Emigration takes approximately four to six weeks to issue a new passport. The overall period of validity of a passport is ten years. When this period of validity is expired a new passport has to be obtained. At the end of a five-year period the passport will be extended for the remaining period of five years on request. Application for a new passport should be made on Form 'K' and the old passport has to be sent along with the application. The fee for a new passport for five years is ATS 1860,-. The fee for a new passport in lieu of a lost passport is ATS 6020,- Fees should be paid by Cash or Bank Transfer only. The following instructions are for your guidance when filling form 'K'. Application for a Sri Lanka passport should be filled correctly to assist the Embassy to expedite the issuance of the passport. Guidelines for Completing the Application form Applications must be made in duplicate and mention the address and telephone number. The Profession, if required, will be entered in the passport. Such request should be accompanied by a letter of proof from the employer indicating your profession. Completed photo signature card on form IM35(B) with two copies of colour photographs glued on the application and an extra photograph should be furnished as specified in the application. The certificate regarding the applicant on page 2 as well as the photo signature card (Form IM35(B) duly completed my be signed by a Medical Practioner, Solicitor, Company Director, Notary, Professor of a University, or a person of similar status living in Austria. Children whose names already appear in the passport or whose births have been registered with the Embassy will be included in either the father's or mother's passport if a request is made to this effect. Please note that names of children cannot be included in the passports of both parents. Requests for inclusion of names of minor children at the time of obtaining a new travel document should be accompanied by three (Unglazed) identical photographs. One copy of the photograph should be attested by the same person who attests the application and the photograph of the parent. Complete the application form for addition of children which is annexed to form 'K'. The applicant's present passport number should be entered and the declaration should be signed. All other information should be furnished as required in the application form. When applying for a new passport, please ensure that the following documents are enclosed. (a) Form 'K' (b) Photo/Signature Card (IM35B) (c) Application for addition/deletion of children (d) Present Sri Lanka passport, in the case of lost passport a copy of Police Report (e) if available copies of National Identity Card and copy of Birth Certificate.

Details: Passports are issued by the Controller of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo and not by the Sri Lanka High Commission in Kuala Lumpur. Citizens of Sri Lanka with residence in Malaysia can apply for a passport at the High Commission. The application will be forwarded to the Immigration Department in Colombo where a machine-readable passport is issued. After receiving the passport from Colombo, the High Commission will inform the applicant to call over at the High Commission and collect the passport. A Sri Lankan passport is now issued for a period of ten years. After 10 years Sri Lankans are expected to apply for new passports. New passports can also be obtained when there are no more pages for visa endorsements. In the case of L and M series passports, names of children under 16 years of age will be endorsed in either of the parents passports. Since the inclusion of childrens photographs in N series passports has now been automated, the High Commission is unable to entertain requests for inclusion of child/childrens details into the parents passports. However, the High Commission could issue a Non-Machine Readable Passport or an Emergency Certificate as a separate travel document until such time the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo processes the application for a new N series passport

Details: Singapore and Sri Lanka are island states and share many commonalties. Both countries have not only fostered good bilateral relations but also shares similar views on many regional and global issues in the international fora. Sri Lanka and Singapore relations began in the early 1950s, and Sri Lanka was represented by a Commissioner and an Assistant Commissioner who were based in Malaysia. Between the periods of 1962 to 1970, there was an Honorary Trade Representative who dealt with consular matters. With the establishment of formal Diplomatic relations in July 1970, Sri Lanka's Ambassador in Myanmar was concurrently accredited to Singapore. This arrangement continued till Sri Lanka established its resident High Commission in Singapore in 1979. The Singapore High Commissioner in New Delhi was concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka till H.E. Mr. Tan Kah Hoe was appointed as the High Commissioner for Singapore based in Singapore. In 1998, Singapore appointed a well-known Sri Lankan business person Deshamanya Lalith Kotelawala as the Honorary Consul-General for Singapore based in Sri Lanka. It is interesting to note that there are many scholars from Colombo Plan holding high positions in Singapore. Under the Singapore Technical Cooperation Programme, Sri Lankan officials have participated in various training programmes in the areas of medicine, aviation, information technology and telecommunications. Sri Lankan professionals have in the past and in the present found fruitful employment in Singapore especially in the fields of education and health. The number of students who are enrolled in Singaporean Universities and Technical Collages are on the increase. There are approximately 10,000 to 15,000 workers employed in Singapore, mainly domestic helpers. Being a free port and a regional trading hub Singapore is an important trading partner to Sri Lanka. Easy access and simplified business practices have helped Singapore to gain popularity as a reliable supply source among the Sri Lankan businessmen. The annual turnover of business between the two countries amounts to millions of dollars. Singapore exports to Sri Lanka are mainly - liquid gas, palm oil, machines, machine accessories, diesel fuel, gold, TV/video etc. whereas Sri Lanka mainly exports seafood, ceramic products, tea, garments, naphtha to Singapore. The trade balance is in favour of Singapore. Both Sri Lanka and Singapore are following market friendly trade policies and share similar views on many international trade issues. Many Singapore companies in their phase of extending activities to overseas have identified Sri Lanka as another destination to setup their branches, manufacturing plants etc. There are also Singapore companies that have engaged in the construction industry and other infrastructure development projects. The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka extends maximum cooperation to the Singapore investors to be involved in as many business ventures as possible.
